This section will outline the steps you should take to secure a desired domain. In a nutshell, (1) do ALL you can and (2) accept the fact that better the domain, the lower the odds of acquisition.

If you want an expired domain that is about to drop, do this:

Sign-up at Snap Names for their "Snap Back" service, if available. Do this EARLY as Snap Names only provides this service for one party.

Sign-up at Name Winner and bid for their help in securing the domain. Do this the night before the drop. Good luck! This will keep you busy for a while.

Finally, appeal to DOMBot@800.Net for help. Minimum stipend, $500. DOMBot will either accept the assignment, not accept, or ask for further information. There's no auction here to waste your time. Do this EARLY as DOMBot only provides this service for one party. If the domain is not worth $500 or more to you, skip this step.

Then, find a real-time Registrar like Tucows or Bulk Register and click, click, click from 6:30 to 7:00 or so Eastern.

Despite your best efforts, you must accept the fact that you may not succeed is securing your domain. Competition is fierce!
